Cecilia was born with cancer. This is her story.
Cecilia was born with cancer. This is her story.

Cecilia was born with cancer. I met her in the Neonatal ward of the Hospital La Fe in Valencia where I work, as you know, in the Pediatric Plastic Surgery Unit.
Many times you ask me what exactly a plastic surgeon does with children.
Among the people “in the street” it is very common to associate my specialty mainly to the aesthetic environment and therefore to adults.
Actually, the full name of my specialty is Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon (or Reconstructive, both are admitted).

The 3 aspects are crucial and cannot be separated: we reconstruct from plastic surgery taking maximum care of the aesthetic patterns of the body of each patient and we take care of the aesthetics by reconstructing what time or accidents have deteriorated.

When I am in the operating room my job is to correct a problem, seeking to restore the functionality that may be injured and trying to ensure that my work leaves minimal aesthetic sequelae.

Cecilia was born with cancer and spent her first 50 days in the Neonatal Unit of La Fe where she was cared for by colleagues from various specialties. The process ended with the intervention of “the plastics”. This is where my partner, Dr. Eva Lopez, and I became part of her life.

Both she and her sister Sara and their parents were very brave. Everything went well and a few days ago Cecilia (through her mother) shared her experience in the Letters to the Editor section of the Levante-EMV newspaper in Valencia.

“I was born with cancer”, Cecilia’s story.

You can read his letter entitled “I was born with cancer” on this website.

Cecilia, my dear, thank you very much for your words. They are the best recognition a medical professional can receive.

I take this opportunity to congratulate you for your courage, your parents for the trust they showed at all times and my colleagues for their involvement in their daily work.

A big kiss!

Patricia Gutiérrez
Plastic Surgeon
