Intimate surgery: the 10 most frequently asked questions
Intimate surgery: the 10 most frequently asked questions

Intimate surgery or female genital surgery already accounts for 1.5% of all aesthetic surgeries according to data from the SECPRE (Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery).
In our practice, however, intimate surgery is already the second surgery after breast augmentation surgery. These are the 10 most frequently asked questions on the subject. I hope you find them useful !

1. What is intimate surgery?

Intimate surgery is surgery performed on the female genital area. Intimate surgery includes surgeries such as labia minora labiaplasty, labia majora labiaplasty, labia majora fat filling, vaginoplasty or female vaginal rejuvenation, liposuction and pubic lift, hymenoplasty etc.

Intimate surgeries have increased during the last decade. This may be due to several factors such as the fact that women are playing more and more sports, sports clothes are tighter, hair removal in the genital area is more extensive, bikinis, swimsuits and underwear are smaller.

2. Who undergoes intimate surgery?

The women who come to our practice for information and to undergo intimate surgery are women between 18 and 65 years of age who want their labia minora not to protrude beyond the labia majora, symmetrical labia minora, not to be bothered by sports, sexual intercourse, etc.

3. Can the hymen be reconstructed?

Of course the hymen can be reconstructed. This surgery is called hymenoplasty and consists in the reconstruction of the hymen that has been broken after sexual intercourse, playing sports, etc.

4. What type of anesthesia is used?

It depends on each particular case but most of the time we perform labia minora and labia majora labioplasty, hymenoplasty, pubic lift and liposuction as well as labia majora fillers under local anesthesia and sedation. Local anesthesia and sedation is NOT a general anesthesia, in fact it allows the patient to return home after the surgery and not remain in the hospital.

When we perform a vaginoplasty we perform it under general anesthesia and the patient remains in the hospital overnight.

5. Do I have to stay in hospital after a labiaplasty?

Most likely you will not have to stay in the hospital. Most of the time we perform female intimate surgeries under local anesthesia and sedation so patients leave the operating room awake, conscious and can go home.

6. How is the postoperative period after intimate surgery? Will it hurt a lot?

The postoperative period after female genital surgery or intimate surgery is usually very bearable, it is usually perfectly controlled with paracetamol or ibuprofen and it is rare that you will need more analgesic medication (to remove the pain).

7. Will the area swell a lot after labiaplasty?

After intimate surgery or female genital surgery as well as after a labiaplasty some edema or swelling of the area is normal, you will see that from 48-72 hours the swelling of the operated area will be decreasing. Measures such as rest and local cold (applied to the area) will help reduce swelling after intimate or female genital surgery.

8. When do I have to go for a consultation after surgery?

The first visit after female genital surgery is usually after 48-72 hours.

9. When do I have to go to have my stitches removed?

In intimate surgery, such as labiaplasty, we use stitches that fall out so it is usually not necessary to remove stitches. During the visits after your female genital surgery or intimate surgery, we will check the operated area to see that everything continues its normal course.

10. What is the level of satisfaction after intimate surgery?

The level of satisfaction after female genital surgery is usually very high. Intimate surgery patients are usually very happy with the final result and tell us that they feel more confident when having sex, more comfortable when playing sports and more confident when wearing tight clothes or bikinis.
