What are scars?

Scars are generated during the physiological process by which our own body repairs a surgical wound or by some type of accident or trauma.

This process is known as scarring and has a period of evolution.

At first they are red, hard and may itch or produce a strange sensation or discomfort when touched (dysesthesia). With the passage of time and under normal conditions, these scars become flatter, pinker or whiter and recover normal sensitivity. This whole healing process takes about a year.

How can I improve scars?

To improve scars there are a number of routines that can bring us many benefits:

  • Avoid the sun. The use of full protection sunscreens prevents scars from becoming dark (hyperpigmentation) forever. It is important to avoid the sun on scars for at least one year.
  • Moisturize the scar. Moisturizing the scar will prevent the skin from being traumatized by the slightest friction and itching of the scar.
  • Massage of the scar. Although at first it may be uncomfortable, daily massage of a few minutes on the scar will make the scar is not tight, is more elastic and the final result is reached sooner.
  • Use of silicone gels / strips. It seems that they prevent evaporation in the stratum corneum of the scar and act on collagen to aid healing.

It is important to remember that personal factors, genetics, area where the scar is located, smoking, diabetes mellitus, race, etc. will have a decisive influence on whether the scar heals better or worse. We will evaluate these factors with you when positioning the incisions and postoperative care.
