SECPRE press release on breast prostheses “PIP”.

The Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery(SECPRE), in relation to the case of PIP (POLY IMPLANTS PROTHESESES) breast prostheses, recalls that:

-In March 2010, the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products, which belongs to the Ministry of Health and Social Policy, published a circular stating that “it had been informed by the French health authorities, through the Health Product Surveillance System, of the suspension of the marketing, distribution, export and use of POLY IMPLANT silicone gel breast prostheses, manufactured by the French company POLY IMPLANT PROTHESE”.

-Thus, it reported that “these prostheses had been distributed in Spain through the Spanish subsidiary of that company, POLY IMPLANT ESPAÑA, which ceased its activity in December 2009”. Therefore, it urged that “the centers and healthcare professionals who might have these prostheses, should immediately cease their implantation”.

-He went on to explain that “people with breast prostheses should check, through the implantation card or the clinical report they received at the time of the intervention, whether their prostheses corresponded to the POLY IMPLANT (PIP) prostheses. If this is the case, or if you have any doubts, you should make an appointment at the center where the surgery was performed or with the corresponding surgeon to plan a correct follow-up”.

In this regard, SECPRE reports that:

-SECPRE has instructed all its members to follow the indications of the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality, and specifically, of the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products (Agencia Española del Medicamento y Productos Sanitarios).

-In this sense, they advise patients with this type of prosthesis to visit their plastic surgeon, who will check the condition of the prosthesis.

-SECPRE advises that, at the slightest sign or doubt of possible breakage of the prostheses, they should be removed.
