Questions and answers about breast augmentation

1. It is important to make sure that the doctor in charge of the breast augmentation procedure has the official title of Specialist in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, asking him/her to show them some accreditation in this regard if necessary. For example, Dr.. Patricia Gutiérrez is a full member of the Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (see SECPRE). SECPRE), the Spanish Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery (see the AECEP file), the AECEP), the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (see the record of the ISAPS), and the Valencian Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SVCPRE).
2. Breast augmentation surgery should be performed in the operating room of a hospital or clinic with all the necessary resources to deal with any emergency.

3. It is important to make sure that the surgeon requests a preoperative study, including the radiological breast tests that are indicated in your case.

4. The surgeon will give them an informed consent form to sign before the operation, which requires anesthesia, being general anesthesia in most cases for the patient’s own safety.

5. It is necessary to evaluate with the surgeon the different prosthesis options available in the market and should be wary of those with comparatively cheap prices.

6. There are no breast prostheses with a lifetime durability, since all of them, as inert materials, are susceptible to rupture or contracture (undesired hardening) like any other implant in the body.

7. The surgeon gives you the identification card of the prostheses once the breast augmentation has been performed. This card certifies the brand and characteristics of the prostheses.

8. It is necessary to go to periodic revisions with your surgeon so that he proceeds to the clinical examination of the prosthesis, being advisable that such periodicity is annual.

9. In case of prosthesis rupture, the prosthesis should be explanted, which is not an emergency procedure since such rupture does not entail any serious risk to the patient’s health.

10. Do not undergo breast augmentation with prostheses for aesthetic reasons if they are minors or encourage these people to do so because they are surgical interventions that require the necessary psychological maturity of the patient.
