In some cultures, it is essential for a woman to be a “virgin” at marriage, as virginity is a sign of purity for these cultures.
Impure” women often suffer rejection and social isolation from both themselves and their families.
The “honor” of these young women is measured in anatomical terms as the persistence of the intact hymen.
In many cases, girls are born with a perforated hymen without any trauma, or it ruptures before their first sexual intercourse spontaneously during the practice of any sport.
There are several types of hymen: septate, imperforate, cribriform, bilabial, trilabial, etc.
In the case of imperforate hymen, when girls reach puberty and menstruation comes, as it cannot be expelled, it accumulates in the vagina producing a hematocolpos and abdominal pain. It is solved with a hymen plasty or hymenoplasty.

What is hymenoplasty?
Hymenoplasty is the reconstruction of the hymen.
It is a surgery that I perform under local anesthesia and sedation and the patient goes home a couple of hours later (outpatient basis).
I use very fine stitches that fall out on their own after 12-14 days.
What is the care after a hymenoplasty?
- Rest at home 48 hours
- Daily hygiene of the area (daily shower)
- Paracetamol/ Ibuprofen first 24 hours
- Do not sport until the town hall or wedding
- No sexual relations until the wedding or wedding.
