    What is Inspiring Girls

I am a volunteer of the association Inspiring Girlsthe platform of professional women with presence in 16 countries that tries to be a source of inspiration for girls and young women, so that they can choose to be what they want to be, without putting limits to their dreams.

The aim of Inspiring Girls is to show them that there are no male and female jobs by giving them as an example our own cases: women who at the time went through the same situation, had the same desires and fears, and who years later occupy positions of responsibility in our profession.

    My talk at IES Sedaví

As part of this volunteer program, last December 13 I was invited to go to the Secondary School of Sedaví (a town of about 10,000 inhabitants just 5 kilometers from Valencia) to talk to the boys and girls in the 4th year of ESO, a warm group of about 100 15 year olds.

The invitation came from Pilar Lacruz, director of studies of IES Sedaví, whom I want to thank publicly for having me to give the talk and for receiving me so warmly.

I began my presentation by explaining something very important but unfortunately little known: gender stereotypes, also known as ‘unconscious’ or ‘implicit bias’. I am referring to the relationships that are established at a mental level and that have a cultural origin, but that little by little become part of an automatic process that accompanies us throughout our lives. Our brain unconsciously learns from what surrounds us and establishes neural connections between different concepts. For example, when someone talks about airline pilots, we directly imagine men.

If you are interested in this topic, I recommend you watch this video (in Spanish) from the BBC and try to guess the riddle it poses.

By going to schools and institutes I try to contribute to end these stereotypes by setting myself as an example (with all the humility in the world) of a woman who studied in a public institute (in my case in a small town in Santander) and who has made every effort to fulfill many of her dreams, such as becoming a doctor, obtaining a specialty in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, conducting research or giving international lectures.

For about an hour I tried to convey the importance of effort, continuous training and languages. I shared with them my hobbies, my daily life and my personal and professional dreams.

They were very attentive at all times and I was surprised by the high participation of both boys and girls when it was time for questions. They were interested in learning more about the research I conduct, how it is funded, who it is aimed at, my upcoming projects and much more.
    It was a fabulous morning!

I belong to several national and international scientific associations but being able to collaborate with Inspiring Girls is very special for me because it allows me to give back to society part of what it has given me and also to do it through a very noble and necessary cause.

I am already preparing the next Inspiring Girls talk that I will give in Muro de Alcoy, a small town in Alicante, in February 2020!
