It is a pathology that can occur at any age, although it is more frequently detected during puberty.
Labia minora hypertrophy can be on one side only or on both labia, and it can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
The cause is unknown, although sometimes there are certain factors that help the excessive development of the labia minora such as early and frequent sexual intercourse, the use of androgens during childhood or the practice of certain sports such as cycling, horseback riding or athletics. In some cases there is some genetic and racial predisposition.
Labia minora hypertrophy is a benign pathology and produces symptoms ranging from irritation in the area or problems with hygiene, to chronic infections, pain when walking, pain with sexual intercourse or psychological and aesthetic problems. It is usually the psychological-aesthetic problem that is the determining factor when deciding on surgery (labiaplasty).
What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is the surgery to correct labia minora hypertrophy, that is, when the labia minora and/or labia majora are hypertrophied or disproportionate.
Is there only one technique?
There are several techniques to solve the problem of labia hypertrophy, from resection labiaplasty to the use of various flaps. I will explain the most appropriate in your case and together we will decide the one that can benefit you the most.
When can I have surgery?
Once you have finished the development.
How long does the surgery last?
Around 45 minutes.
What type of anesthesia do we use?
I usually perform the labiaplasty with local anesthesia (of the area) and sedation so that the patient is comfortable and relaxed in the operating room. After finishing the surgery the patient goes home in a couple of hours.
Is the postoperative period painful?
The postoperative period is not very painful and very bearable. It is important that you rest for the first 24-48 hours so that the area does not swell too much. You will take a course of antibiotics for 3 days to prevent infection and painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol to control possible discomfort. You should also apply a healing ointment every time you wash the area with soap and water.
How long will the swelling last?
The inflammation process varies from one patient to another but usually after 2-4 days the area has largely deflated. Rest is essential to keep the swelling as low as possible.
Will my scar be visible?
The scar on the mucous membranes is of good quality and usually hardly noticeable.
When are the stitches removed?
We use stitches that are reabsorbed after 7-10 days and therefore no stitches need to be removed. This reduces anxiety in the patients as they are spared the need to remove stitches in such a delicate area.
