Before analyzing inverted nipples, let’s start by defining the average nipple size. As you can imagine, there is a great variety of sizes but as a guideline figure it is usually established that the nipple has a projection of about 1 cm.
What are inverted nipples?
When the nipple does not protrude from the areola it is called flat nipple and when the nipple is inward it is called inverted nipple.
This situation is more frequent than is believed, and can affect up to 20% of women, although it can also affect some men.
Learn why you have inverted nipples
It occurs because the lactiferous ducts, which are the ducts that carry breast milk to the nipple during lactation, are shorter than usual, causing the nipple not to come out even when stimulated.
Women who come to my office for correction of inverted nipples tell me that they do not like their breasts for this reason and that this situation makes them feel very self-conscious, even if the size and shape of the breast are adequate.
Surgery to correct inverted nipples
The surgery is performed under local anesthesia. The average duration is 15 to 20 minutes. And we perform it on an outpatient basis, that is, the patient does not have to stay overnight in the hospital. In fact, the patient can return to her daily activities almost immediately after the surgery.
The postoperative period
The postoperative period for inverted nipple corrective surgery is very bearable. Most patients control the possible discomfort simply with ibuprofen or paracetamol. In addition, in this type of surgery we use very fine stitches that fall off by themselves. This greatly reduces the anxiety of most patients since these stitches do not need to be removed.
Improvement and degree of satisfaction
The degree of satisfaction is very high and the patient can already appreciate the change and improvement from the same operating room.
