Hypertrophy of the labia minora is a pathology that can occur at any age, although it is predominantly detected during puberty. Its cause or etiology is not known for certain.
Nymphoplasty is the solution to labia minora hypertrophy.
Hypertrophy of the vulvar or labia minora is considered to be present when the distance from the base of the labium to the edge is greater than 4-5 cm, in some cases reaching a size greater than 10 cm, and surgical treatment is recommended when the hypertrophy is greater than 3-4 cm.
Hypertrophy can be unilateral, bilateral, symmetric or asymmetric, the latter being the most frequent.
Although this pathology can appear at any age, a higher incidence has been observed in women under 20 years of age and in multiparous women. The clinical presentation is very varied, usually manifested by problems of local irritation, discomfort when walking or sitting, as well as problems with personal hygiene during menstruation. Local disorders may increase in intensity during activities in which the vulvar is compressed: walking, running, cycling or with the practice of any sport. In some women, it causes them not to have sexual intercourse due to the fear of showing their vulva, while in others it can cause pain during sexual intercourse due to the entrance of the labia into the vagina during intercourse.
As a consequence of all the above, there are important psychological disorders that have a negative impact on the personal and social life of these patients. Although the treatment must be personalized, there are different surgical techniques, all with good aesthetic and functional results.
A simple physical examination will allow easy recognition of this pathology, and its subsequent surgical correction.
Nymphoplasty is the surgical technique to reduce the size of the genital labia minora. Nymphoplasty is not only performed for aesthetic reasons, but also for functional reasons.
It is a simple technique that can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation and without the need for admission to the clinic or hospital. It consists in the reduction of labia minora (hypertrophy) and remodeling of adjacent structures such as excess skin in the clitoral hood. Other types of treatments can be added such as reduction or thickening of the labia majora with fat from the patient herself using the Coleman technique or with hyaluronic acid, liposuction of the pubic area, vaginal narrowing or vaginoplasty in women who have suffered dilation of the vagina due to childbirth, sexual relations, genetics, etc.
Although at first one might think that it is an unimportant and banal problem, the truth is that patients suffering from labia minora hypertrophy see their daily life limited in many aspects.
Recovery
The nymphoplasty is an intervention that lasts about an hour. During the first 2 days there is a swelling of the area due to the intervention, but progressively disappears edema and bruising to have an almost normal shape around 7-10 days. Sexual relations can be resumed about a month after the nymphoplasty. We use stitches that do not need to be removed. To prevent the stitches from being noticed, we always make an internal suture with a resorbable thread that quickly undoes itself so that after a few days they fall out by themselves and do not need to be removed. Therefore, we avoid the patient the fearful moment of the removal of the stitches.
Results
The scars are practically invisible due to the type of suture used and the precision and care with which we perform the procedure. In addition to performing a conscientious work, we try to make it as natural and anatomical as possible, achieving a very high satisfaction on the part of the patients. The results are long lasting, with the course of time the operated labia minora adapt to their new shape and acquire a lot of naturalness.
Complications
Complications derived from this surgery are infrequent. We can highlight the possibility of local hematoma, infection of the area and wound dehiscence, which are easily correctable. Even more infrequent are the alteration of sensitivity and permanent vaginal dryness.
