Risks of scalpel tourism and the Low Cost Medical phenomenon

Scalpel tourism offers a package of vacation activities and cosmetic surgery operations during the same period. They are performed in countries such as Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Morocco, Thailand, South Africa, India, etc.

Low Cost Medical: don’t put your safety at risk

These clinics set their prices based on the low cost structure in their countries together with advantageous currency exchange rates for the European consumer.

The Internet has brought many users into contact with many clinics in these countries where these low cost packages are offered.

The International Society of Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) warns of the importance of post-operative follow-up, the need to have a team of qualified and qualified plastic surgeons to deal with the possible appearance of different complications, not speaking the same language, not knowing first-hand the experience of other patients, the non-refundability of the money in case of cancellation of the surgery, etc.

We must also warn of the danger of the existence of doctors who are NOT accredited or qualified in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery who make their “dabbling” in non-approved facilities and without any guarantee and without adequate care.

The Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE) has been warning for some time about the danger of these offers that trivialize the seriousness of surgical interventions and the discounts they apply can certainly be at the expense of patients’ health.
