Ear surgery

Otoplasty is surgery for the correction of protruding ears.

It is usually performed on patients from 14-16 years of age. However, it is usually performed on younger children because by 6 or 7 years of age the ears have almost reached adult size. On the other hand, children tend to be very cruel and at this age, protruding ears are used for teasing and teasing at school.

It is usually performed under local anesthesia in the case of adult patients or older children. In young children it is preferable to perform it under general anesthesia. The procedure lasts approximately 45 to 60 minutes and patients can return to work and school within 5 to 7 days.

An incision is made behind the ear, being the scar practically invisible. We proceed to reshape the cartilage of the ear by folding it where needed, removing the excess of the shell and removing excess skin from behind the ear if necessary.

During the postoperative period, a tight bandage is applied for 48 hours, which is replaced by a tennis-type elastic bandage that the patient will wear all day for one week and only at night for 2 more weeks to prevent the cartilage from folding forward while the patient sleeps.

To sew the wound behind the ear, we use sutures or threads that dissolve after 2 or 3 weeks.

The result of the procedure is permanent. Retouching is rarely necessary and complications are extremely rare.
