Gynecomastia is a term derived from Greek meaning "female-like breasts" and is characterized by abnormal breast growth in men.

Most of the time the cause is unknown and can affect 35-50% of the male population. On other occasions, gynecomastia is associated with alcohol abuse, anabolic steroids or hashish consumption.

During the first visit it is important to take a detailed medical history to detect liver disorders, steroid use, or medications containing estrogens (female hormones). In these situations, the elimination of such medication or treatment of the cause may improve the appearance of the breasts and surgery may not be necessary.

The surgery is performed in the operating room under general anesthesia or under local anesthesia and sedation. The patient may remain in the hospital from 6 to 24 hours depending on the case.

If the gynecomastia is caused by an excess of fat, the surgical procedure of choice will be liposuction. If, on the contrary, the predominant pattern is glandular, liposuction will have to be associated with the removal of the gland through minimal incisions around the areola. The incisions are very small to introduce the liposuction cannula and always in inconspicuous places.

In certain cases of large gynecomastia there is an excess of skin that will have to be removed to make the breast firm and therefore the scars will be larger, although we will try to make them as little visible as possible.

Once the surgery is finished we will place a tight elastic band to reduce the swelling and for the skin to adjust to the new contour. This band will have to be worn for 3-4 weeks. The results will begin to show after the 2nd-3rd month.

The patient will be able to resume his or her usual physical exercise a month and a half after surgery and should avoid sun exposure during the first 6 months to avoid possible hyperpigmentation or darkening of the treated area.
The results of this surgery will significantly improve your body contour.
