Nose Surgery

Rhinoplasty or Nose Job

Rhinoplasty or nose job is one of the most common surgical procedures in plastic surgery.

Rhinoplasty (also known commonly as nose surgery) is the surgery that can reduce or increase the nose’s size, change the shape of the tip, lower or raise the back and change the nasolabial angle.

The ideal candidate for rhinoplasty is one who seeks an improvement and harmony with other facial features and not one who is looking for absolute perfection or a nose like that of a public figure.

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and can be done closed (inside the nose) or open, this leaving a small faint scar at the base of the nose (called columella). The surgery usually lasts between 1.5 and 2 hours and at the end of it the nose is placed in a cast or splint of thermoplastic material with plugs in the nostrils.

During the 3-4 days after surgery the patient should sleep his head slightly elevated. It is normal for the appearance of small bruises around the eyes and a swelling of the face during the first few days, which go away over a week. The caps will be removed after 48 hours and the splint after 7-10 days. The postoperative period is usually characterized as being painful, patients describe it as annoying because of the nasal plugs.

When rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent, though possible. The patient should always follow the directions given by the surgeon or his team.

The final results may take time to be perceived from 6 months to a year.
